What is Dev Diwali
(Dev Deepawali)?
Dev Diwali, also known as Dev Deepawali, is celebrated on Kartik Purnima — the full moon day of the Hindu month of Kartik, exactly 15 days after Diwali. In 2026, it falls on November 24.
It is the night when the gods themselves are believed to descend to Earth to bathe in the sacred Ganga at Varanasi (Kashi). As a welcome, all 84 ghats of Varanasi are lit with over 1 lakh (100,000) earthen diyas, creating a breathtaking river of light stretching across the entire city.
Witnessing this spectacle from a boat on the Ganga is the most immersive experience possible — you float between walls of glowing ghats, watch the Grand Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh, see fireworks reflect on the water, and participate in the sacred Deep Daan ritual by floating your own diya.
No photograph, video or description can do justice to this night. It must be witnessed in person — ideally from the Ganga.

What You'll Witness That Night
Six extraordinary experiences — all visible from the water, all in a single evening
1 Lakh Diyas on 84 Ghats
Every single ghat from Assi to Rajghat is lit with earthen oil lamps, transforming the entire 8-km riverbank into a river of fire. Nothing prepares you for this sight from the water.
Grand Ganga Aarti
Seven priests perform the Aarti simultaneously at Dashashwamedh Ghat. Giant brass lamps, incense, conch shells, and Vedic chanting fill the air. Watching from the Ganga gives you a front-row view impossible from the ghat itself.
Laser Show — Chet Singh Ghat
Laser beams and projection mapping illuminate the ancient stone ghats with mythological stories of Shiva and Varanasi. The reflections on the Ganga water double the visual spectacle.
Fire Show on the Ghats
Fire performers on the ghats create dramatic flames and pyrotechnic displays that light up the night. Combined with the backdrop of lit diyas, this is one of the most photographed moments of Dev Diwali.
Fireworks Over the Ganga
Grand fireworks burst over the river, their reflections on the dark water creating a mirror display. From a boat, you're surrounded by the sky above and its reflection below — a truly immersive experience.
Deep Daan — Float Your Diya
Participate in the sacred ritual of Deep Daan. Light your earthen diya, make a wish, and gently release it into the Ganga. Watch it join thousands of floating lights drifting down the holy river.
